I've been reading this series all weekend but this book just was a let down.+++Spoilers+++
I usually love tortured Hs but this one was too self-absorbed. I didn't love that the h compromised her principles and all she held dear (her patients and friends) just to have a physical relationship with the H. She'd made an appointment so see a renowned specialist but just doesn't go to see him because of staying with the H. She knew it was a once in a lifetime opportunity. I can't imagine a woman of that era just doing it for sex. I didn't find the premise credible and there was the risk of pregnancy, which of course the H doesn't even consider. He selfishly wants her to stay on and on with him, without making any promises or commitments to her. As I've said over and over again, these 'mistress' type books never honour or value the h and it's hard to come back from that low tone. Not even the gifted Ms Ranney could do it this time.
I'm done with this series and can't be bothered to read the last book.

To Love a Scottish Lord Book Four of the Highland Lords Karen Ranney 9780380821068 Books Reviews
found the plot well thought out and I do think there was more psychology on Mary's part a little ahead of her but then perhaps we, the people of the 21st cent .a little too smug?
Have this series and enjoyed very much. Keep reading until I finished the series
I read this book in two days - it's great! After reading Karen Ranney's Highland Lord Series - I really want to take a trip to Scottland! I would highly recommend this book. There are five in the series - I bought all - would advise everyone to do the same.
Each book of this series has its own personality. Hamish is dark and brooding. His tale is also dark and brooding. Brother Brendan engages Mary's services and what begins as medicinal healing becomes the healing of Hamish's soul.
Ranney is most adept at providing a story that gives readers an insight into the injustices of an era and how those injustices victimize individuals and thwart good intentions. Hamish and Mary's tale is one of these stories -- two victims who step away from propriety and take a chance on each other.
Through Ranney's characteristic writing style, the reader "feels" Hamish's pain, Mary's compassion, their need and desire...and a lot of beautifully descriptive "healing" that doesn't come from Mary's medical texts.
I loved this story over and waaaay above the first three books of this (MacRae) Highland Lords series..[and those stories were well told]. This story was so exceptionally well played out. So perfectly told. This is the fourth of five books of "The Highland Lord" series and I found it delightfully edgy and totally delicious in all it's agony, suffering and misery. And love! The raw torment combined with regret(s) and intertwined with romance was gut wrenching. This author so adeptly pulls you in to this story and holds you completely spellbound, on the edge of your seat..turning the pages and biting your nails, wondering at the outcome. I loved that this story had some "edge" to it. The author [FINALLY] breaks away from the safe(r) romance of her previous stories. But then again, this Alpha Hero is totally different from his brothers and has a tormented past to deal with. It had to be told in this raw fashion. Kudos to K. Ranney!
If you love books with a tortured hero then this one is for you! It is not a light and easy read, it has a dark and gritty feeling to it. The descriptions of Hamish's torture are hard to take. However, the story is riveting. There are lots of twists and turns in the plot and the suspense kept me turning the e-pages. This is my second novel from Karen Ranney and I have enjoyed both very much. I love her writing style and feel totally immersed and drawn into her books. They have a deep emotional quality and deal with serious subjects. I am eager to read more from her.
I just finished this book by Karen Ranney and it is the first that I have ever read by this author. After reading this book, I discovered that this was actually book 4 in a series which I have not read so I wonder how different my experience with the book would have been if I had read the other books first. However, I must say that I did enjoy the story and plan to go back and read the other books in the series. I would recommend this book to others interested in this genre.
Summary
A Lord Not Meant to Marry
Hamish MacRae, a changed man, returned to his beloved Scotland intending to turn his back on the world. The proud, brooding lord wants nothing more than to be left alone, but an unwanted visitor to his lonely castle has defied his wishes. While it is true that this healer, Mary Gilly, is a beauty beyond compare, it will take more than her miraculous potions to soothe his wounded spirit. But Mary's tender heart is slowly melting Hamish's frozen one . . . awakening a burning need to keep her with him -- forever.
A Lady Who Dares Not Love
Never before has Mary felt such an attraction to a man! The mysterious Hamish MacRae is strong and commanding, with a face and form so handsome it makes Mary tremble with wanting him. Already shadowy forces are coming closer, heartless whispers and cruel rumors abound, and it will take a love more pure and powerful than any other to divine the truth -- and promise a future neither had dreamed possible.
