3.5-4 stars. The blurb drew me in - I'm a sucker for unrequited love. And with a plot line where the hero has to choose between the woman he's in love with and the woman he's fathering a child with? Of course I'm sympathizing with the pregnant woman. And I really did like Lanie and even John. The story actually revolves more around after the hostage situation with John trying to redeem himself and the aftermath of all the damage that happened where 2 people who would've found happiness together eventually given enough time, now have to fight for it with everything they've got due to numerous more obstacles in the way that prevent them from seeing that as easily. Of course I loved the angst and the turmoil. I would definitely want to read a story about Lanie's cousin Caitlin.Tags : What Mattered Most [Linda Winfree] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. <DIV>A man in the worst place he can bebetween two womenand forced to choose which one lives or dies.Houston homicide detective,Linda Winfree,What Mattered Most,Samhain Publishing,1599984210,Romance - Contemporary,Romance - Fantasy,American Light Romantic Fiction,Fiction,Fiction Romance Contemporary,Fiction Romance Fantasy,Romance,Romance: Modern,FIC027020

This book made me cry so much. After reading other reviews and the posts in the romance forum. I completely expected to hate the hero. The opposite happened after their baby was born. He tried to make up for not really being there for the pregnancy and for the heroine. He became Mr.Mom when she was still in the hospital and her future was in question. I began to understand where the hero was coming from while being distant from the heroine, but it didn't clear the slate, he was still held accountable for his actions, or lack thereof, in the beginning. I understood the distance she held when she woke up in the hospital, the inability to bond with her baby. She had just survived a traumatic experience, her baby was delivered and she missed out on the moments after he is born to bond. The poor heroine had so much going on at once, it was believable she didn't go and forgive the hero for all the things he did prior to their child being born. I prefer books like this one where the heroine holds out for a while before forgiving. This book is a keeper for me.
This book has been on my TBR list for a while. I kept passing on it because I wasn't in the mood for a suspense book. I should have read this book much sooner. The suspense is a very small part of this book and I loved every part of this book.
I highly recommend this book. I love cheater books with the right amount of remorse the hero John redeemed himself. He was living with Lanie for a year and she was 8 months pregnant with his baby. But the whole time he was with Lanie he believed himself in love with his partner Beth. Beth's ex husband holds both women hostage and tries to get John to choose between Lanie and Beth.
While holding the women hostage Lanie is injured in a way that puts her life and the baby's life at risk. John finally realizes that what he felt for Lanie was love. Will Lanie forgive him and give him a second chance?
From page one I was on Lanie's side, but as I went along and saw the changes in John and how he loved their baby and how he went about proving to Lanie that he loved her and he had made a terrible mistake I couldn't help but cheer for him. This book has it all, suspense, angst, self discovery and maybe a HEA.
When Lanie was pregnant the baby never got the attention it deserved. She went for ultrasounds alone, waited for her partner to put baby furniture together and never allowed herself to see his disinterest. Because he kept his distance emotionally she was not in on a very dangerous secret. It altered her life. Some reviewers think she whined too long. I don't think she was guilty of anything. This story has a happy ending but I have a hard time accepting how the "hero" paid so little and she paid so much. Still, it is very well written, holds your interest and does resolves things between the two main characters.
I'd put off reading this for a while, reluctant to believe the hype surrounding it, but I was silly to do that. With Linda Winfree I've found a new favourite author.
WHAT MATTERED MOST lays on the drama and tough backstories heavily, but it worked for me in this book. Once I started reading I couldn't put it down. The premise a man who got one woman pregnant while believing himself to be in love with another, was always going to make for an emotional read.
When both women are caught up in a hostage situation, it forces John to put things into perspective. His reluctance to make a commitment to Lanie was heartbreaking, and then watching him suffer when she almost dies, and then having to deal with her rejecting him - it made for a lot of wonderfully challenging situations. I wanted John to have to suffer as he came to his senses, and he certainly did that. The man he transformed into was an incredible person, and seeing him figure out how to convince Lanie she was the most important person in the world to him was great.
This was a well-written, truly excellent read. One small complaint is that there were a number of typos - particularly towards the end.
This was my first book by this author, but definitely not my last. I would highly recommend this one.
I admit, I love stories like this, but usually they are a disappointment. The hero is never sorry enough and the heroine is far too forgiving. But this story had me riveted! I loved Lanie! John? Not so much, although he did grow on me. And Beth? She was a BEEP! (I have discovered, does not appreciate curse words. Lol) After dealing with a situation that came about involving Beth & John (and yep, I'm blaming them) which not only caused Lanie's brain injury but forced her to have her baby early, she is also dealing with thinking that John doesn't love her but loves Beth (his partner and former lover). And rightly so, since John had given her no indication that he was in it for anything other than sex. He had as little to do with the pregnancy as possible so what else is she to think? So she doesn't trust him, but has to learn to deal with him because of their son.
John stepped up and tried his best to make up for the way he treated her. But she was so hurt, it took a long time for her to even work up to being civil with him. And I liked that about her. Other people might have found that annoying, but I found it more realistic of the situation. I did believe in their HEA, but this lost a star because of Beth for being a BEEP and John for being an idiot!!
3.5-4 stars. The blurb drew me in - I'm a sucker for unrequited love. And with a plot line where the hero has to choose between the woman he's in love with and the woman he's fathering a child with?
